Lord Bragg to launch county’s Poppy Appeal

AUTHOR and broadcaster Lord Bragg will launch this year’s Poppy Appeal in Cumbria.

The peer will host the event at Keswick’s Theatre by the Lake on October 31. The Royal British Legion regard him as the ideal candidate because of his literary interest in families affected by war.

His award-winning trilogy comprising The Soldier’s Return, A Son of War and Crossing The Lines follows the fortunes of a working-class Cumbrian family during and after the second world war.

Lord Bragg will meet some of The Royal British Legion’s volunteer welfare caseworkers and Poppy Appeal organisers at the launch.

The Poppy Appeal raised £329,000 in Cumbria last year, contributing to a national figure of just under £30m.

Meanwhile the Remembrance Service in Cockermouth will take place on November 9. The parade will assemble in the Fairfuield car park at 1.45pm and will proceed to the war memorial for 2pm. A service will take place in All Saints church at 2.30pm.
