£20m housing bid submitted for Cockermouth

A PLANNING application has been submitted to Allerdale council for a £20m housing development next to Fitz Park in Cockermouth.
The scheme is likely to bring 221 new homes to the town.
In April, planning consultants MJN Associates, of Workington, and developer Lakeland Leisure Ltd, of Cockermouth, submitted a screening option request to Allerdale council for the project, which would see homes built on seven hectares south of Fitz Wood, north of the A66 and running on from the Parklands Estate.
A letter to the council said the development was likely to include 51 affordable homes for first-time buyers. A large number of the houses will be for rent.
Lakeland Leisure Ltd director Bob Slack was unavailable for comment.

Have your say
Cockermouth does not need more housing developments as there is plenty of housing available within ten miles and at a much lower cost. What employment is there to support the extra housing when the areas largest employer is reducing it's workforce by 800 and it is likely there will be further reductions in the coming years. If these properties are valued at existing Cockermouth prices then many people will not get mortgages anyway so why not build towards the coast and leave this area alone. Answer is that the developers are not looking to help people find homes but to maximise profits.
