A unique portrait of the Queen made up of thousands of photographs of Keswick will be sent to Buckingham Palace.

The completed mosaic will include 2,000 photographs of the Lake District and Keswick to create a snapshot of the region in the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee year.

The project has been launched by Keswick Tourism Association (KTA) in conjunction with Slug & Bull Design Studio to create a time capsule and to showcase one of the most beautiful parts of Her Majesty’s realm.

A Buckingham Palace spokesman has said that this portrait is a “lovely idea” and the Queen is understood to be thrilled with the gesture.

Graphic designer Jonathan Branthwaite of Slug & Bull, who is working on the project, said: “I think it’s a really exciting project. It’s a good way of getting the local community involved.”

Visitors and locals can submit photos of Keswick and the Lake District.

They can be of landscapes, landmarks, visitors and residents enjoying the area, local attractions, local wildlife, and businesses or local produce.

The photographs will include many pictures of Derwentwater, often described as the Queen of the Lakes.

The portrait will go on display during the Jubilee celebrations in Keswick’s Market Square on Sunday June 3, and also at the Lakes Alive spectacular on Derwentwater on August 10 and 11.

Following the tour, the artwork is due to be delivered to Buckingham Palace in November.

The town’s attractions and businesses will also display the completed portrait.

The deadline for photo submissions is Tuesday May 8, with the official launch on June 1.

The online image will feature a special “zoom” feature that will allow people to explore and enlarge the individual photos that make up the Queen’s face.

The website will remain live for a year.
