People have been united all along

WORKINGTON feels like a different town this morning.
The opening of the temporary road bridge at Northside has reunited families and friends, cut massive journey times and given traders in town and along the coast a long overdue fillip.
The bridge building - 72 days from start to finish - was an incredible achievement and a tribute to contractor Morgan Est.
It proved, as we indicated in this paper before Christmas, that the engineering work could be done in a matter of weeks.
Our concern was always that the initial procurement process looked like holding things up.
Whether red tape was effectively cut or not, the ribbon has certainly been cut to open a structure that brings normal routine back to many lives.
No one likes a party pooper, but questions over the long term solution, including a decision about damaged Workington Bridge, remain.
Meanwhile, in the midst of the celebrations we noted a quiet dignity surrounding the blessing of a tree planted in memory of PC Bill Barker, who lost his life at Northside Bridge during the floods.
The tree, a short way from the bridge, was referred to as a symbol of growth and a reminder that life goes on.
It is a simple sentiment, and a timely reminder that West Cumbria’s recovery has all been about the spirit of its people who have been united throughout.

Have your say
Good on you MORGAN EST. You lads have done a great job.
Just a pity our hopeless councillors couldn't have got you started on the job in December.Posted by Derek on 23 April 2010 at 12:58
