A former Keswick School pupil, killed in a crash near Dovenby on Monday, died on his sister’s 16th birthday.

Jordan George Peck, 17, of Windebrowe Avenue, was thrown from his Yamaha motorbike when it was in collision with a Ford Focus on the A594 near Toll Bar Cottage at about 8pm. He died at the scene.

The car driver, a 23-year-old Cockermouth man who was not injured, was arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving.

He has been released on police bail.

Jordan worked as an apprentice chef at the Gilpin Lodge Country House Hotel, near Kendal, for four days a week. He attended Kendal College one day a week.

A hotel spokesman said: “Jordan had a room full of books with recipes from around the world and was researching opportunities to work and gain experience abroad. He was a shining star.”

Jordan was inspired to become a chef when he visited Marcus Wareing at a London hotel.

Mike Chapman, headteacher at Keswick School, said Jordan was a talented youngster and very focused on his career.

He said: “This is an exceptional tragedy that two pupils from the same year group, Chloe and Jordan, have died in such a close period of time.

“What is also so awful about this is Jordan’s sister Kayleigh turned 16 on the day he died, which tragically echoes the loss of Chloe who died on her 16th birthday last year.

“Jordan left Keswick School last June but during his time here he was a very focused individual and was set on being a chef.

“He was a perfectionist, very talented and I’m sure he would have reached the top of his chosen career.”

Jordan was part of Velo Club Cumbria, a road racing cycling club, and had won the Junior Juvenile Championship in 2009.

Ken Hargreaves, the club’s president, said: “He was one of the young up-and-coming stars.

“He had cycled a road racing bike since he was 15.

“He had tremendous ability. He was first class and way above some of the other children in the club.

“He was an outstanding young individual, a quiet youngster but very committed and competitive.

“He was a reflection of his family who have always been outstanding, and his grandfather and father have always stood by and been keen supporters of the club.”

Emergency services closed part of the A594 for eight hours after the accident.
