Workington Reds ace Tony Hopper to retire after Carlisle Utd friendly

Cumbrian football will say an emotional goodbye to a stalwart of the game tonight with ex-Carlisle United and Workington Reds midfielder Tony Hopper hanging up his boots.

Hopper is expected to make a cameo appearance in tonight’s friendly between his former clubs at Borough Park (7.30pm).

The veteran decided to call time on his 19-year playing career after much deliberation over the summer.

He admits that it was a tough call to make.

“It’s a bit weird. It hasn’t dawned on me that this is the last time I’ll play football. I don’t think it’ll really hit me until I’m watching from the sidelines or waiting to hear the score,” he said. “Football has been a huge part of my life. I’ve got some great memories.

“I’ve played at Wembley and been promoted twice at Carlisle but I think my greatest memory is beating AFC Wimbledon in the FA Trophy last season.”

“What I’ve achieved with Workington over the last few years has been amazing.

“It’s been the best spell of my career and I thank Darren Edmondson, Viv Busby and all the lads for that.

“I know it will be emotional for me because I have given my all for both clubs.

“Things weren’t always great at Carlisle but I did my best. I am a Cumbrian and I was proud to be playing.

“At Workington I have captained the side and we almost got promoted last year.”

The 34-year-old has made more than 250 appearances for the west Cumbrians and around 100 games for Carlisle.

He said: “There was no prouder man on the pitch than me when I was playing. I have been really lucky to be a footballer but now I’m looking forward to being a dad.

“I haven’t been around on weekends because of playing but now I get to spend more time with my kids.”

Reds boss Darren Edmondson will have both Lee Andrews and Gareth Arnison at his disposal this evening. The pair missed the Gateshead win but are both back in contention.

Trialists Alex White, Matty Tymon, Aaron Taylor and Rico Colulo will also be given pitch time in a bid to win a contract with Workington.
