Workington's new bridge is a boon to the town

IT WAS my great pleasure today to take the bus across the new road bridge at Workington.

Not only is it a boon to all who use it, it is pleasing in its setting and a credit to all concerned.

The removal and clean-up of the old bridgework on the north side was efficient and tidy but it grieved me to see the sandstone blocks broken up in the course of the work, though I appreciated the tight timescale to clear the road.

I hope the remaining sandstone will be recovered from the river bed and the south side abutment of the old bridge and recycled.

There are many repair jobs where it would be a good match, and such stone is both scarce and expensive.
