Caring touch puts Riverside significantly above zero
RECENTLY my mother died, as a resident in Riverside nursing home in Maryport, and this letter is in response to your article on the quality of standards of the home (Times & Star, March 5).WHY is it that whenever the phrase “Gypsy sites for Allerdale” is mentioned, the words Maryport and Workington then follow (Times & Star, March 5).JUST who is behind the decision making on Shiver Me Timbers playground?IT’S now entering the fourth month since the Cockermouth floods.FOLLOWING recent criticism of United Utilities for their management of the level of Thirlmere and of attempts to make political capital of the matter, I wrote to them. I give two quotations from their reply.HAVING enjoyed the good fortune of happily married parents, and all the happiness of a contented marriage myself, I remain deeply unimpressed by the Conservative vote-grubbing idea advocated by John Payton that I deserve awarding a tax benefit, too.WHEN I was writing to the various authorities shortly after the event, thanking them for their prompt actions in building Workington North Station and introducing the shuttle train service, I also asked them as to the possibility of having the station as a permanent feature of the Cumbrian coastal line.THE loss of the bridges across the river Derwent has brought into focus just how fragile the transport infrastructure is in West Cumbria (or the county as a whole)!

Urgent need for complete plan for flood works
AS THE rehabilitation work gains momentum let us hope that between them our local authorities can agree a comprehensive plan for the Derwent/Cocker catchment area. I AM writing to support the temporary trains from Workington to Northside becoming permanent.THE donation of £10,000 to Cockermouth Cricket Club, which was totally devastated by the flooding, came from Rotary charity funds, not from the flood relief account.HOW come Allerdale council thinks that Grasslot in Maryport is suitable for a gypsy site?REGARDING the letter “Dispersal and Disrespectful and a Breach of Human Rights” (Times & Star, March 5).
